Yes, yes it did.
I asked the following question to people over the Christmas break - and the results are in.
'Has targeted advertising ever ruined a surprise gift?' One person answered 'Yes!' while others admitted it was a close call.*
Let's say for example you go on ASOS to check the price of that coat your partner once mentioned but has long forgotten. You see the price tag...and you close the page. That's it. End of.
Wrong.
Three days later you're casually checking your emails when they look over your shoulder and clock the targeted ad that you've somehow overlooked.
It's the fucking coat.
You didn't even plan on buying it, you just wanted to see how much it was. Now, they're excited and you're on the spot trying to make up excuses.
Too late. Instead of surprising them with a gift, you're the one left surprised. Because now you find yourself forking out silly money for something you just wanted a quick look at.
Thanks for that advertising. You've spoiled the magic of Christmas. Sort of.
Then to add further insult to injury - the very same coat priced at £250, is suddenly reduced to £69.99 on boxing day!
Targeted ads must be stopped. I'd Imagine this sort of thing must be happening all the time. If you have a targeted ad-related spoiler please let me know. Think how many Birthdays, Valentines and Christmases they've ruined.
It's statistically easier to get away with having an affair than to hide items you've recently viewed on eBay.
* Survey based on asking 7 people at a NYE party - I didn't want to become the party bore constantly yapping shite about my profession, I like to have fun. It's still evidence..sorta.
